Why It Is Needed
Violent crimes has been at an all time high in the United States, particularly in Baltimore City. In 2007, Baltimore City had over 280 murders higher than the year before. The largest contributing factor was gang related violence among teens and young adults ranging from 11-25 years of age (National Drug Intelligence Center, 2003).
Research on violent television and films, video games and music reveals unequivocal evidence that media and visual violence increases the likelihood of violent and aggressive behavior immediate and long-term(Anderson et. al., 2003).
For the last five decades, Americans have been concerned about the frequent depiction of violence in the mass media on youth, as well as its impact on the way they dress, communicate, and belief system. Because of this concern, six medical and public health professional organizations held a Congressional Public Health Summit on July 26, 2000 and issued a Joint Statement on the Impact of Entertainment Violence on children. “The statement noted that entertainment violence can lead to increases in aggressive, attitude, values, and behavior particular among children (Joint Statement, 2000, P.1).
According to the U.S. Department of Justice (2006), there was 38,110 violent crimes, 546 murders and non-negligent manslaughter, 1178 forcible rapes, and 14, 780 robberies in which a great deal of these crimes were caused by gangs. In Baltimore County (2004), there was 87,002 arrest between the ages of 10-17 years of age (Puzzanchera et. al ., 2006).
Because of the aberrant behaviors there has been a correlational effect on children and families health producing higher rates of mental health disorders, physical disabilities and challenges, and incarcerations (McNeil et. al., 2005; Kappos, 2007; Crosby et. al., 2004), . Many children and families suffer from hypertension, diabetes, stress related diseases and injuries. Also due to the insidious cycle of addiction many individuals are contracting infectious diseases at alarming rate such as Hepatitis C, HIV, AIDS and STDS due to intravenous drug use and promiscuous sex (Herbert et. al., 2007).
In conclusion, using an entertainment platform, THE KINGDOM provides children, families and communities the spiritual empowerment required to have a balanced Christian life encompassing the spirit, soul and body.
